Care and Maintenance of Natural Stone

Natural Stone Care & Maintenance Guide

Natural stone surfaces such as marble, granite, quartzite, limestone, and travertine are timeless, durable, and uniquely beautiful. Because stone is a natural material, proper care helps preserve its appearance for years to come.

Daily Cleaning

For everyday cleaning:

  • Use a soft cloth or sponge

  • Clean with warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner

  • Dry with a microfiber towel to prevent water spots

Avoid letting spills sit for long periods, especially on lighter stones.

What to Avoid

Natural stone can be sensitive to harsh chemicals and acids. Do not use:

  • Vinegar, lemon, or citrus-based cleaners

  • Bleach or ammonia

  • Bathroom cleaners or grout haze removers

  • Abrasive powders or scouring pads

These products may cause etching, dulling, or discoloration.

Spill Prevention & Stain Care

Stone is porous and may absorb liquids if not sealed properly.

Clean spills immediately, especially:

  • Wine, coffee, tea

  • Oils and grease

  • Citrus juice or soda

  • Makeup or lotions

For stubborn stains, use a stone-safe poultice or consult a professional stone care specialist.

Sealing Natural Stone

Most natural stone surfaces require periodic sealing to help resist stains.

  • Sealing does not make stone stain-proof

  • It helps slow absorption and makes cleaning easier

  • Frequency depends on the stone type and usage

Ask your installer or supplier for sealing recommendations.

Heat & Thermal Shock Protection

Natural stone is heat-resistant, but sudden temperature changes can cause cracking.

  • Always use trivets or hot pads

  • Avoid placing hot cookware directly on the surface

  • Do not expose stone to rapid heating or cooling

Scratch & Impact Prevention

Stone is durable, but edges and polished finishes can chip or scratch.

  • Use cutting boards (do not cut directly on stone)

  • Avoid dropping heavy objects near edges

  • Do not stand or sit on countertops

Bathroom & Shower Stone Care

For stone in wet areas:

  • Squeegee or towel dry after use

  • Use stone-safe cleaners only

  • Ensure proper ventilation to reduce moisture buildup

Avoid soap scum cleaners unless specifically labeled safe for natural stone.

Long-Term Maintenance Tips

To keep your stone looking its best:

  • Clean regularly with gentle products

  • Reseal as recommended

  • Protect surfaces from acids, oils, and harsh chemicals

  • Use coasters, trivets, and cutting boards

Natural stone will develop character over time, adding to its authentic beauty.

Important Note About Natural Variation

Natural stone is a product of nature. Variations in:

  • Color

  • Veining

  • Texture

  • Mineral deposits

are normal and part of what makes each slab one-of-a-kind.
